Decorating on a Budget

Who says you can't decorate on a budget? I have designed and decorated homes that ranged from your average bungalow to custom built million dollar homes (and everything in between) I have seen the richest people be the most cheap and the frugalist want to spend on the items that they know would last a lifetime.

So where does my own personal tastes and decorating philosophies come from? Being frugal and extremely budget conscious when decorating my home. I like the 'use what you have' principle, and buy second hand whenever possible, and am always on the hunt for something that needs or can be refinished.

I don't follow trends for our home, I basically go for whatever I like and will work in the space with our taste.

Even when decorating for parties, I check for what I have first. Over the years I have collected a number of party pieces, and I tend to buy white or glass. You can mix everything with the white and glass, no matter what colour theme you are going for. Dollar stores are great for supplies, but why waste money on paper plates when you can use your own. We have a separate set (actually we bought 5 sets of white 20 pieces settings) for 4.99 each!) and those are the dishes we use when we have parties.

I am making cupcake stands now to rent out when I make cupcakes or party platters for clients. How easy is it to head over to the dollar store pick up some of those plastic silver looking trays, a couple of candle stick holders, some glue and paint! I'll post pics when they're done.
